The technological evolution of media, the trend towards religious and cultural plurality and the fears caused by the events of 11 September have led to reconsider the legal provisions protecting the secret for ministers of religion. At the core of this revision there is the idea that secret is not the only way to safeguard the information revealed by the faithful to a ministry of religion. Other forms of protection can be considered, based on the guarantee of freedom to communicate without any public or private interferences and on the protection of information linked to people’s privacy. In this context, particular consideration is given to the problems of security and to the issues created by the spreading and strengthening of non Christian religions.
